I could’ve sold you my 1965 mustang. Has a small block 302 v8 with original interior, original paint. Only thing is that I wrecked the front and is in way better condition. Would’ve let it go for $5k

I can see that you're definitely going to need to re-wire your classic Mustang. If you're going to swap in a more modern motoe, than you should use more modern wiring. I work for American Autowire, and we make a Classic Update kit for the 1964-66 Mustang (pn 510125). You should give us a call at 1 (800) 482-9473 or visit www.americanautowire.com for more info.

My first car was a '66 like this. My folks bought me it in '69 for my senior year in high school back in SoCal. It was in Arcadia Blue with blue interior and the 289 engine. I swear I could be going 65 on the freeway, hit the gas, and leave tire marks. I sold it 7 years later because it had serious overheating problems.Had to have the transmission rebuilt earlier. In between classes in college I'd use the backseat to study with my legs stretched out between the front seats. Good times. On my '66, Under the chrome Mustang horn was a Falcon badge.

In my opinion and seeing the things you can do with goonsquad and that body and chassis straighten machine you have. I would suggest a restomode. Get a new salvage new mustang and get that body onto it. You are a very capable and hard working guy, I’m pretty sure you can do it. That mustang you have does not have the original engine in it. So there is no use to restore it to original condition, with you capabilities you should dona restomode.

I restored a 1965 Mustang with my stepdad as a teen in the 90s. You can purchase about any part you would ever need to rebuild one of these things. As part of the restoration of my car, we replaced the outer door skins, quarter panels, taillight panel and floor pans on mine. While the cowl is welded, it is common to take them loose because a lot of 64.5-66 Mustangs have issues with leaky cowls from leaves getting stuck inside, underneath the cowl grille, retaining moisture and rusting out. When you take the outer cowl loose, be sure to check the condition of the sheet metal and ducting underneath. You're going to have to replace that cowl sheet metal anyway so since you're in there, I'd check that for sure and try to protect it from future issues, if possible. I 'm guessing that a backfire from the carb may have cause the fire. BTW, the box on the driver's side firewall looks like an Excel or Mallory or similar brand aftermarket ignition system and the distributor appears to also be part of that and not OEM for the 289 or 302. The coil also appears to be Excel or Mallory or similar brand. I believe that the ignition system may have been switched from points and condenser to electronic and the distributor and cap are way bigger in size than an OEM 289 or 302 distributor. I'd definitely replace the wiring, I imagine a new harness would be very inexpensive and worth the effort to not have to be chasing wiring gremlins around while patching the existing harness. Also, old wiring and wiring insulation gets brittle over time and probably best to replace it anyway. One thing that would look very cool is to add the OEM A/C to the car, it is a huge, chrome unit that bolts under the center of the dash and looks awesome. I purchased a used one back in the 90s with the intentions of putting it in mine but never did. I'm sure that Vintage Air makes a kit, too. I actually love the original optional "woodgrain" steering wheel for the 64.5-66 Mustangs, it looks very cool as does the aftermarket rallye pak with gives you 2 additional gauges mounted to the steering column just in front of the dash. Adding those would be cool! Another thing to consider is that there is a rear valance pan (the area where the backup lights are) available that I believe was standard on the GTs that had holes in place of the rear bumper guards where the exhaust could come through. That is also a very cool upgrade that you could make for probably a little of nothing as far as money goes. Speaking of Mustang GTs, GTs actually also had foglights in the front grille and that is a neat look and would be easy to incorporate into the car, especially since you are also rewiring it, if you chose to. Inside the car, there are actually 2 vents that you can open that will bring let fresh air come into the cabin from the cowl toward your legs and feet. You open them using round knobs on the far left and far right of the underside of the dash. Between those and the wing windows in the doors, you can stay surprisingly cool even without air. I love the idea of a Coyote swap. I'm not sure if it'll fit without some mods to the engine bay and shock towers however I am sure you can do it because you're good like that. It'd be great to see you swap this old Mustang to a 6-speed manual, too if you wouldn't mind. I have had a number of 1965 Mustang parts cars over the years while restoring mine and have a few miscellaneous parts, maybe a few door windows, trim pieces, quarter panel extensions, etc. They are likely OEM. If there is anything that I might be able to provide for the build, I'd be happy to do it. I have the parts at a friend's house and I will try to go over there to see exactly what I have and let you know. Best of luck on the build! I'll definitely be following this one! The car in this ad has a Rallye Pak and factory air inside and the GT lower valence panel with rear-exiting exhaust: www.flemingsultimategarage.com/vehicles/2804/1965-ford-mustang-gt Photo of 1966 GT front grille with foglights: www.mustangandfords.com/how-to/paint-body/mump-0612-ford-mustang-foglights/photo-01.html Photo of OEM "woodgrain" Mustang steering wheel: missourimustang.com/1965-66-deluxe-steering-wheel-assembly-w-center/
