According to Midland County officials as of ~3pm (EST) 5/20/2020, the Sanford dam may still be somewhat intact but they can't tell because it's underwater (they're using the term "failed" because it's spilling over, not necessarily because the structure has collapsed). Latest images of the Sanford dam appear to show overflow limited to the emergency spillway area. The current hope is that the dam itself will hold long enough for the upstream flow from the Wixom lake breach to recede. If the Sanford dam fails, areas downstream are looking at 500-year flood levels. Local and state police have already begun staging in a number of downstream areas, presumably to facilitate evacuations if the dam fails.

@Michael Stover Who is going to pay for it? That is where the problem starts. One of the major problems with earthen dams is not the dam itself. But with the emergency spillway designs. If you look at most of them, they are simply lower areas of the earthen dam. Some may have riprap in that area but most are just grass seeded earth. It takes concrete to make a spillway that works and survives. One good thing did come out of it though. A lot of the sediment in the lake got washed out so if they rebuild the dam, there will be an increase in capacity for storage.

The utility operating those dams could not afford to maintain them. So they lowered the water level to a safe height. but SOMEONE at the STATE told them to raise it because of some endangered fresh water muscle. It was Attorney General Dana Nessel

Edenville Dam did not fail from the flood. It failed from years of neglect. Following the federal government's 2018 license revocation, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) took oversight of the dam. EGLE determined that the dam was structurally sound.

I don't understand why the dams could not have been releasing large amounts of extra water a couple of days ahead of what they KNEW was coming... It was forecast well in advance, the radar showed it plain as can be.... They could have dropped those reservoirs by a good ten foot before the torrential downpours even started... Could they not? And if not, why not? Should that not be SOP? I can grab a box of crayons and explain it for them if they'd like... An awful lot of home owners on the receiving end of this mess sure would appreciate it...

It is the state of Michigan’s fault partially. The hydro company lowered the level of the water because the federal government said they were unsafe. That’s why the feds pulled their license to generate power. The state made them fill it back up because of some fresh water mussels or the like. State owns this one

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel ignored growing concerns about the dam’s ability to withstand heavy rain and focused instead on environmental conservation. Just three weeks before the flood, AG Dana Nessel sued the owner of the dam, Boyce Hydro Power LLC, alleging it illegally killed thousands of freshwater mussels by lowering water levels. As a result of pressure from the Michigan AG to keep water levels high, and inaction on safety concerns, the dam did not have an adequate spillway capacity and collapsed. Days after feds (EPA) revoked the dam’s license to generate power (2017), the State (Fascists Whitmer regime under Nessel) assumed oversight, inspected the dam and declared it and its spillways to be in “fair structural condition" and not lower the water by 8 feet.

Of all places to have this happen, ugh what a frign nightmare. I feel that the homeowners should not be the ones to come up with the money to fix ones property. It's the state governments fault for not updating the dams like they should have and they should be held accountable to pay for ALL of the damage that occurs from this. Though that is unlikely in this country where the people get fucked over all the damn time.

We are not able to afford modern infrastructure in this country because of of our massive military involvement at virtually every other point on the globe. Even in peacetime we have troops fighting at multiple sites and hundreds of bases around the world. Our buildup of military force makes it necessary for other countries to increase their strength to counter us, causing a continuous escalation of arms threat. It is now high time to rethink our strategy for safety in the world. It has made us unable to maintain a pandemic response team and various other social and economic support mechanisms.

Just a thought. With all the dams in the world. Does anyone nowadays really know what to do or what will happen? Does that make sense?" Is there planned situations of dams failing? The only way to understand some of this stuff is to go through it. I assume most people look at a dan and go yep concrete wall & don't give it a 2nd thought. Never been any issues. Not gonna ever worry about it. I want to know the actual number of how many dams in the world are WAY outdated. And the excuse has always been no money too expensive. Well just look what will happen.

We weren't allowed to buy flood insurance because we are not in a flood plain. 2 other dams were also involved in the mess. The Chappel dam structure on Wiggins lake was also topping. Everyone was evacuated on Monday night along with all Billings township residents on Wixom out of fear of a washout. It held, by the grace of God, but it contributed greatly to the pressures on the Tittabawassee side of the Edenville dam. The other dam, in Beaverton, is the only non-berm dam in the county. It just went through major upgrades in the last couple of years. It held strong. When the Army Corps of Engineers rebuilds Secord, Smallwood and Wixom, we hope for much more advanced design.

It may be possible for Michigan to implement through reason and understanding the following in order to avoid continued catastrophes: reestablish the natural watercourses and wetlands. Wetlands must be given back to nature as natural water catchments for floodwaters. I think dams are part of it. This is according to Billy Meier an 86 year old man from Switzerland who claims to be in contact with people from another world.
