    BMW Bavaria.... Don't laugh, they shared lots of parts with the 3.0 coupes including the engine. I had 3 two barrel carbs in mine that would do 150 mph all day long. Not too shabby for 1974. Corvairs should also be mentioned. They failed at the mission but it was intended to be a sports sedan to compete with European cars.

    Watched the whole video because I love sport sedans and because I love the knowledge you guys bring, but I was also anxiously awaiting the Chevy SS mention. Did not disappoint. However, I wouldn't say the interior is shitty. Definitely not up to luxury car standards, but it isn't half bad. 40k miles in and I don't have single creak or rattle.

    Don't forget the Infinity Q50 and Q70 (formerly the G35 and G37). The Maxima is absolutely not a sports car - it feels sporty if you keep it under 50 mph, but the transmission hampers responsiveness and its way too heavy and not well enough balanced to handle well above 50.

    Datsun 510 and the Alfa Romeo Alfetta sedan (1972) were two greats you missed. The Alfa was very exotic for an everyman's car with a transaxle, dedion rear end and inboard rear disc brakes. They are one on the best driving Alfas that nobody knows about.

    I know this will stir the pot. How about the Chevy Impala?!!! Before people go off I'll remind people that Dan Gurney took one to England and was destroying the competition until mechanical issues (a wheel cam off) forced him to retire. Jag was so upset they managed to get the rules changed before the next race. You could also include the Falcon and Galaxy. I know they raced coupes, but they are based on the sedans. Also Zora Arkus-Duntov had a pretty wicked Impala;)

    28:50 1961 Pontiac Tempest, smaller for the American market, a true 4 door sedan, independent rear suspension, a rear mounted transaxle, 50/50 weight distribution, 215 CI aluminum block and head V8. Or in 62 a true good 4 speed and a larger V8. For Japanese how can you not think of the Datsun 510(Nissan Bluebird), if the BMW 2002 counts then so does the 510. Specifically the 1.8L SSS version.

    If you count the Maxima of the late 80s to maybe mod 90s, the only other American sedan I could come up with was the Gen1 and 1.5 Ford SHO (pre jellybean V8, which was in good). It's a stretch, but better than a 6000 or Eurosport. Plus it has the prettiest intake runners this side of an Alfa

    53 minutes? What a great way to end my day! I'm pretty sure Nissan put the S20 in the PGC-10 (sedan) Hakosuka, I believe it launched in early 1969. I think it was only a couple of years later that it was fitted to the KPGC-10 (coupé).

    As far as the US market is concerned, BMW introduced the sport sedan with the e28 5 Series 533i/535i - perfected in the 1988 M5 - after which they lost the recipe for all time.

    When doing fuel mapping I remember another reason for running rich (apart from having to keep the engine from detonating), was to keep the pre-cats cool enough. The emission regulations, required that pre-cats had to be close to the engine for them to get hot quick enough to reduce cold emissions but the flip side is you have to throw fuel at them to keep them cool, once engine warms up. That was for the V12s I worked on, I remember setting lamba ratios to 0.75 at WOT to my amazament! I am not sure if that's relevant for smaller engines, but it's funny that to keep emissions "low" 25% excess fuel had to be burned(I should say wasted and not burned as it won't burn)..

    There is a difference between having a preference and being closed minded. You kind of just sound close minded on this one. You failed to mention a big advantage of smaller turbocharged cars, weight. Two examples of great turbocharged cars I have owned, Fiesta ST and Audi TTRS. NA engines are great for all the reasons you mentioned. But, like the Miata, NA isn't always the answer. You mention many, many times about turbo complexity and reliability. Jason, I forgot, how many engines have you put in your Sirocco?

    To Derek's Point "There's no replacement for displacement" not being used in other places than the US: The German Version is "Hubraum ist durch nichts zu ersetzen als durch mehr Hubraum" (the only replacement for displacement is even more displacement).

    I had a 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo. HUGE lag. Neat car on paper, but I lived in constant fear of it after a couple of close encounters involving snap oversteer, in situations where it was a total surprise. I was able to improve its handling substantially with a fairly simple mod (rear control arm bushings), but that ultimately did not solve the fundamental mistrust I had for it. I kept it for less than a year before moving on.

    I think Jason's lag times are pretty out there. I'm not a fan of the modern 2.0t love, but they absolutely will make full boost under 2000 RPM in under a second. At high RPMs, I dare say the lag is undetectable when tuned right. Certainly nowhere near 0.8 seconds. I had a 2006 S60R, which is not exactly bleeding edge anymore and had a low compression, port injected 2.5 making 300 HP. It was rated for full torque at 1950 and it would come on boost very quickly...under a second below 2500 RPM (hard to say at 2000 RPM, given the stall being like 2300 RPM). Boost was definitely usable all the way down to around 2100ish RPM with the TC locked (below that, it would unlock).

    The 2 of you have such car knowledge it's crazy. Great content. I will say 315k is closer to 458 Speciale money not quite there but close and no way I would take the 240Z over that. I would also choose a 458 Italia for 170k now and a RS6 for 125k over this 240Z. They are great cars and I love the 240Z, 300Z and many more nissan cars. Just don't think they are worth that much.

    Must say, for a weekend/track fun car, I've come to the conclusion that i like supercharged cars best. Go nearly as well as turbo, better control in tighter corners, great exhaust sound/and some nice induction supercharger whine. But not as nice as individual trumpet induction sound. Still, its a good compromise. And the boost increases as revs rise, so you want to keep reving it higher as he engine doesn't nose over, torque tends to level out, but not drop.

    Just goes to show you who has more racing experience. A normally aspirated 6 cylinder engine putting the smack down on a 8 cylinder forced induction engine. Imagine what the GT2-RS would have done to the snake!

    Left lane fools keep me from buying a car. Lifted excursion is my highway tool if I have to pass on the right I pass with half my truck in the offenders lane. I drove the highways in Italy and was just amazed how they move over. Its impossible to be stuck behind someone in the left lane they just get over it was beautiful.

    It's difficult to convince someone that downsized boosted engines aren't always economical. This video helps a lot. And I couldn't agree more that sports cars should have NA engines for all the reasons you mention. Although I must add that some countries had some very aggressive taxes on vehicles i.e. over 2.000cc in Greece and Italy for many years, which made constructors turbocharge their engines in order to compete. My previous weekend car was a '96 Alfa GTV 2.0 V6 Tb (turbo benzina) and is an example of that era. It had almost the same hp as the top spec GTV 3.0l V6 NA engine at the time, but less revving, and with NOT the same sound at all.

    I almost feel vindicated by this episode. As an owner of is350, the slowest of the sportish cars out there, I enjoy driving it more than 340i. I like the predictive linear power of the naturally aspirated v6 but BMW with the turbo lag is the one that's considered the driver's car.

    I realized that I am REALLY German: Why should you have a "Sports car" to giggle in it? I would grin when I see that giggle-thingy diappear in the rearview mirror of my Sports car that can hold It's (my) line through corners. Straightline performence is for Idiots. Boring.     The GT500 did come back in '07 with the 5.4L, facelift in '10, all aluminum 5.4L in '11 and '12. 2013 and 2014 came the "Trinity" 5.8L with 663hp you were referring to. Love the show guys, thank you for the content!!

    I don’t know Cammi. I am basically at the end of my automotive journey and I can’t agree. I had like 60 cars and driven most exotics up til recently because they’re just getting too fast. (In the corners, still waiting to be wowed by straight line acceleration) My big turbo r32 gtr is a lag monster and doesn’t hit until 5k but it’s fun and makes cool turbo noises even just cruising around. If you think it’s boring then fair enough, but I think it’s new cars that are boring you. I do enjoy responsive na cars too, so yeah I have a Integra Type R. I also have a stage 2+ Golf R, so I can experience the differences you speak of back to back. Honestly it’s all fun. It’s character. The cars are more than just machines. The golf r was so boring stock though, it needed modifying. Just the case with most new cars.

    I've owned quite a few turbo vehicles at this point (VW's and Saab's). I MUCH prefer the driving experience. NA engines do have their advantages, but I love the slight delay where you feel the power more unexpectedly. It's more fun on a daily basis.
