Hey there viewers! My name is Eric O. and I own and operate a small town 3 bay shop in upstate NY. I grew up in the automotive industry (in my parents shop) and have over 17 years (working full time as a mechanic) experience repairing domestic and Asian cars and light trucks. This is all I've done my whole life. It's my hope and desire to produce videos that provide accurate information saving you time and money while sharing my love for fixing cars, my knowledge and my experiences with you as I travel through automotive repairs day to day in the shop.

Not to knock the process but that looks like about enough labor to have bought a good used axle. Were there not any available or were they priced sky high?

Good job once again , glad I'm not the only mechanic the checks everything over to make sure everything's right even though the customer doesn't always like the price or like what you did it's better to check everything over and make sure there's no other problems in that area for the future , !! wondering how the gear lube was in that front pumpkin probably pretty dirty for that bearing to be like that

To me, it looks like the diff had been apart before. The carrier bearing and races were swapped so that you had a bad bearing and a good race together. I have done this when I was young and dumb to save a couple of bucks and get a few more miles out of the bearing. I have learned the hard way this only sets you up for a catastrophic failure at the worst possible time and the purchase of even more expensive parts at that time. Thanks for the great video.

I bought new a 1978 Trans Am and it suffered the exact same carrier bearing failure. I bought my wife a 1979 Trans Am - same thing. Seeing this now causes me to suspect that some long dead GM engineer produced a calculation for sizing carrier bearings, it got placed in a manual, now transferred to computer. You plug in the numbers and still get the wrong answer.

That's not a good way to measure backlash, depending on the distance from the pivot point the measurements will all be different but have the same gear mesh backlash. You have to actually measure the gap between gears to be accurate. Does the service manual tell you how to measure it?

Going back at least 50 years ago, my grandfather and uncle were tearing down a diff that had become suddenly very noisy. The reason for the noise was that a used car dealer had found a way of hiding a worn out diff by stuffing it with banana skins, couldn't say for sure how long the skins lasted, but there was a distinct odour. Became a catch phrase in the family for anything that was f...ed.

Had a customer bring a 1990 ck series 1500 4x4 silverado when I worked at our GM dealership in 1991. He somehow completely destroyed the front diff, broke the cases, galled all the bearings running it dry, and broke the teeth off the pinion and ringgear. GM did not make a service replacement assembly. So, that's right, the parts dept had to order a complete front differential assembly, piece by piece. I got several large boxes of parts and had to assemble it from scratch. What a p.i.t.a.
